Scouting Report From the NFLPA Bowl

American Team:

RB: Roy Finch. 5'7 167 Oklahoma: Was a late addition to the game and really impressed. Was the main running back all game. Finished runs even though he is undersized. Terrific speed and quickness, makes great moves in the secondary. Good return skills in both punt and kick return fashion. Biggest negatives are his size and pass blocking ability. With his size he projects more as a 3rd down back so pass blocking needs to be improved. Overall his speed and quickness and ability to make players miss will have him selected in the later rounds of the draft.

RB: Franklyn Quiteh, 5'10 206 Bloomsburg: Prototypical size. He has great balance when he runs and a very good burst. has good second level speed, and makes people miss. He runs through arm tackles. The biggest knock is competition. He was the 2nd leading rusher in any division in football this season.

WR: Tony Washington, 5'11 200 Appalachian St:  Washington is an excellent route runner who when the offense when to 2 minute was the clear favorite on the American team. Very good hands and field awareness. Lacks great speed but will make a roster as a late pick or free agent.

OT: Ryan McGrath, 6'6 300 Ohio: Showed above average run blocking, was able to gain outside leverage and great pulling technique. Struggled in pass blocking, kick stepping to deep before defender rushes up field allowing for easy inside moves. Not a likely draft candidate but definitely showed something out there today.

OG: Kevin Danser, 6'6 301 Stanford: A bit slim for an interior offensive lineman and struggles in pass protection. He is an excellent run blocker. Executes combo blocks and climbing very well and is an above average puller. Needs to work on his pass balance and to not be driven back. Could be a mid round player with ability to be a very good starter.

S: Booboo Gates, 5'11 227 Bowling Green: Very physical safety who is excellent in the run game. He is a very good tackler with good instincts to crash the box. He has very good hands and is an above average return man. Plays well in coverage but struggles in man to man.

LB Jeremiah George, 5'11 219 Iowa St: George is an undersized athletic linebacker. He has great instincts and does an above average job at shedding blockers. Has good sideline to sideline speed. Has trouble taking on initial block but once engage can separate. Late round type of player.

DE Kasim Edebali, 6'3 245 Boston College: Has a great motor, very raw but could enter the league as a pass rush specialist. Needs to work on his strength and awareness. Has a natural timing instinct in getting off the ball fast. Middle round type of player.

National Team

QB: Dustin Vaughn, 6'5 220 West Texas A&M: Dustin has prototypical size and arm strength. The biggest question on him is the competition level he faced in college and has a tendency to break down in mechanics and that effects his accuracy. He can make all of the NFL throws. He will make late rise up the draft board and will be a late round QB project that could develop.

RB: Anthony Wilkerson, 6'1 214 Stanford: Wilkerson his a hard nosed north south runner. He is a one cut player who attacks holes full speed. Could sneak into the draft late.

FB: J.C. Copeland, 6'1 280 LSU: He was extremely impressive as a blocker. Very physical, hits hard, plays with an attitude. Needs to cut down on weight. Very tough to tackle when given the football. Has above average hands for a fullback.

WR: Isaiah Burse 6'0 187 Fresno St: Had one bad drop during the game but other than that looked stellar. Went up and got a difficult ball high. Ran very good routes and seemed to have chemistry with all his QBs. Could be a mid round sleeper at WR.

DT: Jamie Meder 6'2 306 Ashland: Another small school player who impressed during the week. He is a prototypical 5 technique with good strength and ability to shed blocks. Does a good job getting hands up when blocked to knock down passes and disrupt passing lanes.

DT: Khyrie Thornton 6'3 300 Southern Miss: Thornton didn't really stand out to me in the beginning of the game. Played a bit high, got stood up and when lost in the battle would tend to give up on the play. As the game moved on you saw his skill. Very violent hands and can penetrate on pass plays. He can be very disruptive when he puts in the effort. Needs to improve his motor. Will be a midround guy.

Dangers Of The Senior Bowl

Aaron Colvin entered practice at the North South practice of the upcoming Senior Bowl in which college athletes play an all-star game in front of scouts, general managers and coaches from all over the NFL. He left practice mid way through the day with an ACL tear that will keep him out till atleast the first week of the NFL season.

Colvin isn't a household name and probably wasn't going to end up one after the game but he is still a top cornerback prospect to many scouts. While he was definitely a day 2 pick (2nd & 3rd round) he as seeing his draft stock rise.

This injury likely puts into question two things. 1. Does this take Colvin completely out of the draft? 2. Are the risks worth the rewards for players like Colvin at the Senior Bowl?

To answer the first question, there are other players who tore their ACL's but rarely does it ever happen this close to the draft. Without the ability to practice in the preseason, this likely takes him tothe  end of the draft (rounds 6 or 7) I think the talent level and his projections someone will take a chance on him but it wouldn't surprise me if he is moved completely out of the draft all together.

Second, football always has risks but players like Alabama's A.J. McCarron skipped the senior bowl because of these kind of risks. From what I have heard and read most NFL scouts look down on players who turn down their invites. They want to see players compete and show that passion to want to learn and develop. The risk outweighs the rewards for some though because they feel they have proven everything they needed to during the season. Players like McCarron feel that they are comfortable at their projected draft position and feel they won't raise that job.

Colvin was a player who needed to be in Mobile to prove his competitiveness against some of the top receivers in the college game. Colvin unfortunately felt the risk of that decision and will now lose a ton of money because of it. Colvin took the chance and I still think team will reward him for that sacrifice by selecting him late.

Is There Another Change Coming To The Game That We Love?

The Extra Point has been around since the inception of football. While the point value changed from its early rugby style rules it is still part of the game. But now Goodell is considering ridding the league of this staple.

In 1912 when the American Professional Football Association was started, which preceded the NFL, the league made it a standard one point after a touchdown was scored. This has remained for the 100+ years that football has been alive and well.

Roger Goodell talked to Rich Eisen of the NFL Network and said that the NFL's competition committee will look into abolishing the extra point. In 2013 only 5 extra points were missed in over 1,200 attempts. Since 2004 extra points have had a 99.1% success rate.

The goal of the NFL is to make every play exciting and currently the making of an extra point is a given. After a touchdown is scored every fan knows now is the time to turn the channel and check on the other games.

Until there is a better option this rule is likely not going to be changed this year or any years in there relative future. There was an option Goodell had brough up about teams getting an automatic 7 points unless they decided they wanted to try for an 8th point and if they fail they go back to 6 points. But that isn't really any different than we have now.

If the League wants to make a change than they should make it a 1 point play if the team is set on the 5 yard line and a 2 point play if the team is set on the 10 yard line. It'll make the extra point more exciting and more teams will have a tougher time deciding which they would prefer to go for.

No matter what they decide it will take a lot of agreement on something so drastic for anything to change. It took them a short time to come up with the new rules on protection and we see the strong complaint that has brought on. Hopefully the competition committee will take a bit longer to come up with something the majority of the league and its fans will enjoy.

Trivia Question of the Day

What is the largest age difference between opposing starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl?

How Cheap Was It?

In his season ending press conference this morning Bill Belichick came to the podium and with out being asked a question brought up the hit Wes Welker placed on Aqib Talib. Now, before we get into comments lets review what happened.

The injury happened during the 2nd quarter when Wes Welker was running a crossing route and collided with Talib causing him to miss the rest of the game with a knee injury. After the game quotes began to come out regarding the injury and the play.

"It was one of those plays where it's kind of a rough play and I was trying to get him to go over the top and I think he was thinking the same thing and wanted to come underneath and we just kind of collided," Welker said. "It wasn't a deal where I was trying to hit him or anything like that. I hope he's OK. He's a great player and a big part of their defense."

Talib doesn't even fully recall what happened on the play to cause that injury. If he was able to go back out there he would of and he said it was very painful to have to continue to watch his team play.

Fast Forward to this morning and we get this:

“One of the worst plays I’ve seen,” Belichick said (Via Mike Reiss) about the hit on Talib at his season-ending press conference. ”The way that play turned out, I went back and watched it, which I didn’t have a chance to yesterday.  It was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open". “I’ll let the league handle the discipline on that play, whatever they decide. It’s one of the worst plays I’ve seen. … That’s all I’ll say about that.”

The Patriots ran the exact same pick plays during the game and on one play there is evidence of Edelman leaving his feet to make a block on a defenseless defender crossing the field. If Welker learned how to make these pick blocks from anyone it was from the team who has done it the best for years. If Belichick doesn't like it he needs to look in the mirror on how he teaches his offense and his wide receivers.

The Championship Game Predictions

New England Patriots vs Denver Broncos: This game scares me especially with the spread currently at -5 for the favored Broncos. Bill Belichick is one of the greatest defensive minds of our generation and he has figured out a way to stifle the greatest quarterback of our generation. It is the battle of two of the greatest minds and I can not wait to sit back and enjoy the ride. The biggest advantage for teams against the Broncos are when they are able to control the clock and run the ball and the Patriots will be able to do both. I think the Broncos ability to score may outweigh that ability though and I am reluctantly taking the Denver Broncos to win the game 31-28.

San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks: Seattle is the most difficult team in the NFL to beat at home. San Francisco knows this first hand and even though they are playing hot, I don't see the 49ers ending this recent run the Seahawks are on. I think they may make it closer than prior games in Seattle but Seattle will win this game. The difference to me is Russell Wilsons ability in pressure games vs Kaepernick's. I am taking Seattle to win in a low scoring 13-9. Spead on the game is currently -3.5 Seattle.

Did NFL Players Find a Loophole

Darren Rovell the ESPN sports business analyst wrote a piece earlier in the week about how Omaha Steaks is interested in endorsing Peyton Manning for his use of the audible "Omaha". Peyton Manning said Omaha a reported 44 times during the game against the San Diego Chargers which began talk about advertising.

According to Rovell, there is a loophole in the rules that would allow Quarterbacks to use their audible calls at the line of scrimmage as advertising sales.

Omaha Steaks is going to donate (between 5 companies) $500 for every time Peyton yells Omaha to Peyton's charity. The Peyback foundation is for "the future success of disadvantaged youth by assisting programs that provide leadership and growth opportunities for children at risk." Last game this foundation would have received $22,000.

Now Peyton and his agent have said they will never do advertising for personal gain because it hurts the integrity of the game. I don't think he is the only quarterback with that thought process but at the same time I am sure they may end up being one or two guys who take advantage of this loophole. So here is to hopefully not hearing "Ready, Mrs. Chow Chicken, Mrs. Chow Chicken, Set, Hut".

Illegal Use of Hands

Kellen Winslow Jr. found himself in a little bit of trouble when a woman pulled up next to him in a Target parking lot. NJ.com goes into more detail about what truly happened that day.

From the report:
As she exited her vehicle, she commented to the male regarding how cold it was. As she stood near the open driver side window of the Escalade, she observed the males [sic] erect penis. She stated that she believed he was masturbating. [The woman] provided a written statement regarding her account.

When police arrived on scene they noticed he was in dark sweat pants but his genitals were not exposed but there were two open bottles of Vaseline. He also had empty containers labeled "Mr. Happy" and "Funky Monkey" which he told police he bout at a gas station and he smokes it to relax because the NFL doesn't test for it.

They let Winslow walk only to test those containers and later arrested him for synthetic marijuana possession.

A New Man at #1 According to One

Mel Kiper Jr. ESPN's lead draft analyst has put out his first Mock draft of the year and their are a couple surprises but one that truly sticks out.

Kiper's #1 overall draft pick is Johnny Manziel and has Tedd Bridgewater going as the 3rd quarterback selected overall. Manziel is undersized for the NFL game but compares to a Russell Wilson in and out of the pocket. Kiper feels that Manziel is the only player that seems to be a consensus top 5 selection when talking to most of the scouts around the league.

I am still not high on Manziel, I think he has some transferable talent to the league but the majority of his game still needs work. His immaturity (as seen at the Manning camp), his off the field antics are some of the none football characteristics that are red flags. On the field I feel he relies to much on jump ball passes which he was able to get away with, with Mike Evans at 6'5 he was able to get away with it.

His ability to create in the pocket and out of it his an elite trait I have not seen in a long time. He is able to keep a play going and continue moving his offense down the field. At just 205 pounds I am concerned with all of the hits he will take in the NFL. Durability will be a major concern for me as will losing. Manziel has never really been on a losing team before and that will happen his first year in the league. Another strong heisman SEC quarterback that came into the league has had a difficult time with that (Cam Newton). Manziel will be scrutinized every game for every little thing he does and it will be interesting to see how he handles the draft process.

And Then There Was One

In a not so surprising move the Minnesota Vikings have hired Mike Zimmer to be their head coach. Zimmer who was the defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals for the last 6 seasons has finally received his chance to be a head coach.

This year many outsiders got to see Mike Zimmer on HBO's show "Hard Knocks" which created a lot of talk around the league that Zimmer was a head coaching candidate in waiting. Zimmer did an excellent job this season keeping his defense one of the tops in the league while losing some key defenders.

The Vikings decided to go with a defensive minded coach again after having Leslie Frazier their former defensive coordinator as their head coach. Zimmer gets a lot of love from his players, former and current. He is well respected and will bring a sense of toughness to Minnesota.

Right now the leading candidate for offensive coordinator is the browns Norv Turner.

New York Giants Adding A Little West Coast Flavor

The New York Giants hired their new offensive coordinator this afternoon, Ben McAdoo, after Kevin Gilbride retired after the season ends. Gilbride had been working with Eli Manning for almost 10 years and built the offense around his strengths.

The Giants decided to go away from the run and shoot style that Gilbride loved so much. This caused Eli to have 5 and 8 step drops which also put pressure on the offensive line to hold their blocks longer.

Ben McAdoo, 36, has been with Mike McCarthy pretty much his entire NFL coaching career. First in New Orleans when McCarthy was the Offensive Coordinator he brought in McAdoo as the offensive assistant and quality control coach, then in 2005 McCarthy joined the 49ers as the offensive coordinator and brough McAdoo along with him to be the quality control coach there as well. When McCarthy took over in Green Bay he brought McAdoo along with him.

McAdoo will bring a west coast offense to the New York Giants next season. He'll ask for a lot more one step and three step drops for Eli which should take pressure off the offensive line and get the ball into his playmakers hands quicker.

His contract with the Giants is for two years one more than what Tom Coughlin has left on his. The belief by some is that the Giants were looking for their future head coach and that McAdoo may fit that build. I believe with a good season next year you may by staring at the future coach in New York.

Only Two Spots Left

With Jim Caldwell agreeing to become the new head coach of the Detroit Lions that leaves just the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings as teams looking for their next head coach.

Currently, Mike Zimmer is the leading candidate in Minnesota and I highly suspect that deal will be announced in the next 24 hours.

Cleveland on the other hand has been a tough team to figure out and while we have ideas on who their top candidate is (Adam Gase) they are still bringing coaches in for their first round of interviews (Mike Munchak).

As we wait for these positions to be filled their are other layers that get effected. For example Jim Caldwell will be taking the secondary coach from the Ravens who will now need to find a replacement.

Because of this there are some big coordinator positions that will need to be filled and these coaches could be or have been head coaches. Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers, and the Baltimore Ravens are all currently searching for new offensive coordinators. Some of these positions will be filled by someone being promoted (Frank Reich in San Diego) others will be filled by positional coaches from other teams.

Since Zimmer will likely be hired in Minnesota the Cincinnati Bengals will be looking for a new defensive coordinator. Most of the major college programs have filled out their coaching staffs so I don't see anyone being plucked from the NFL to take over their. Once February arrives teams will be in full fledged free agent mode examining who will stay and who will go.

Top 2014 Tight End Prospects

This years class has some elite tight ends but the depth of the class isn't truly there this year. But we will see as many as five starters come out of this draft.

1. Eric Ebron, North Carolina: Ebron came into this season as a top tight end but not the best one. The 6'4 231 pound tight end is a bit undersized at the tight end position compared to some of the other guys in this class. His athleticism is by far and away elite and it is what separates him from everyone else. He is an average blocker and doesn't possess the strength to move defensive ends. Needs to work on his route running skills but is a size mismatch when lined up wide. 1st round grade

2. Jace Amaro, Texas Tech: He has the height and size to be a mismatch both on the line and off the line. He is 6'5 260 and is a smooth athletic runner. He has a chance to surpass Ebron as the top tight end of this class with a great combine effort. He needs to develop more as a blocker but has the frame and size to develop in that area. Amaro is very good after the catch and is a good route runner. He was used often in the slot at Texas Tech and learned to use his size well when going after passes. 1st round grade.

3. Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington: Austin has great size at 6'6 265 he is your old school style tight end with new school athleticism. His biggest knock is that he doesn't always show up on game film and disappears at times. He has great hands and a good radius in which he can catch passes. He has great strength and ability to block all defensive players. He is a smooth runner but doesn't possess great speed. He compares well to Rob Gronkowski size but lacks the same competitiveness Gronk plays with. 2nd round grade.

4. C.J. Fiedorowicz, Iowa: He is your classic blocking tight end. He has below average speed, and average hands. Struggles to catch balls outside of his frame and struggles to create separation when running routes. He is an excellent blocker who would make a nice 2nd tight end for teams who tend to go with players like Ebron has their starting tight end. He is the 2nd strongest blocking tight end in this class. 3rd round grade.

5. Richard Rogers, California: Rogers went to Cal as a tight end was later moved to receiver in California's spread offense. He is a fluid runner with great size but isn't a strong blocker. Most of his time at Cal he spent split out as a wide receiver. He isn't as fast as the other tight ends in this class and doesn't possess the same athleticism. He is raw and young so there is potential for development and growth. I have him as a late 3rd round early 4th round player.

Jim Caldwell Hired

A day after the Detroit Lions supposedly lost out on top candidate Ken Whisenhunt they have agreed to terms with Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, and former Indianapolis head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell was under some scrutiny this season after Baltimore's run game seemingly disappeared, but those close to the team knew that had more to do with offensive line problems vs. play calling.

Caldwell, 58, has been in the league for 13 years and was a staple in the college coaching ranks before that. Caldwell will be bringing Baltimore Ravens secondary coach Teryl Austin and Rutgers offensive coordinator Ron Prince with him to Detroit. Austin will take over as defensive coordinator and Prince as offensive coordinator.

Caldwell impressed the Lions in his interview by breaking down every throw Matthew Stafford made this season and went over what he saw as strengths and flaws. Stafford sat in on the interview and came away just as impressed. Caldwell worked with Peyton Manning for 8 years and helped in much of Peytons development. He will clearly help Stafford and is very excited to return to his midwestern (Born in Wisconsin) roots.

Whisenhunt Hired

Ken Whisenhunt has agreed to become the 17th head coach of the Tennessee Titans in their history. Whisenhunt was long thought to be the next head coach of the Detroit Lions. So much so that the Lions had their private jet fueled and ready to go to pick up Whisenhunt.

Whisenhunt a former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals who led his team to the super bowl and eventually lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, was thought by many to be the best candidate available.

One of Whisenhunt's best traits is his ability to work a develop quarterbacks. He was Ben Roethlesberg's offensive coordinator in his first two seasons and he has also worked with Kurt Warner and now Phillip Rivers. He will begin a project to take over 3rd year quarterback Jake Locker's offense and in Locker's 3rd year the team will decide if this will be their franchise Quarterback.

Broncos Lose Important Defender

The Denver Broncos are reporting the cornerback Chris Harris suffered a torn ACL in yesterdays win over the San Diego Chargers.

Quentin Jammer struggled against Keenan Allen all day yesterday and Champ Bailey has missed the majority of this season battling injuries. Bailey played mainly the slot corner yesterday but clearly will have to move back outside for the game against the Pats.

While Bailey was out Harris had the best year at corner of any of the cornerbacks the Broncos put on the field. This was his best season in his three years with the Broncos.

Damien Berry Story Looks Fishy

Damien Berry a former running back for the super bowl winning Baltimore Ravens sold his super bowl ring. Now he is claiming that is not true and that he would never do such a thing.

Berry spent the entire 2012 season on injured reserve before being cut to start 2013. Berry who went to the University of Miami is currently out of the league.

Berry who says "I would never knowingly sell my Super Bowl ring," Berry said. "I'm not that kind of guy. That's not me. The ring means a lot to me and I want to do whatever it takes to get it back. This isn't what I'm about." (Quote obtained from the Baltimore Sun article)

Darren Rovell obtained a photo copy of the paperwork filed to show that this was a legitimate transaction and it has Berry's signature on it. Whatever the case may be this former NFL player looks to be lying about the ring.

Coaching Favorites

There are currently job openings still in Detroit, Cleveland, Tennessee and Minnesota. Each of these teams are down to their final candidates with each team having a different leading candidate.

Here are what sound like the top candidate in each city.

Detroit: Ken Whisenhunt the current offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers seems like he is the #1 choice for the Lions at this point. The Lions have had interviews with former coaches such as Jim Caldwell but it seems they are keen on adding Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2007-2012 where he compiled a 45-51 record. He also took the Cardinals to the franchises first ever super bowl in 2009. He is a top target for the Titans as well.

Cleveland: Cleveland has had mixed stories coming out of their home office for weeks now. Saying Bob Stoops was top target, then McDaniels (to later say they removed him as a option) and now we are on Adam Gase's turn. Gase is just 35 and is the youngest coach on these lists of options. He is currently the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos and we have seen Peyton Manning's coordinators have success as head coaches.  Gase has been with the Broncos his entire NFL career, but he started as an offensive graduate assistant with LSU under Nick Saban. He has yet to interview for the Browns and we are unsure how long the Browns will be willing to wait while the Broncos are still in the playoffs.

Tennessee: Dan Quinn the Seahawks defensive coordinator has been a name that has been flying around as of late. Titans owner Tommy Smith loves what Seattle does so much he is willing to wait out this entire process and have Quinn be a finalist before he even interviews. Quinn is 43 and has been working with top tier defenses his entire career. He has worked with the 49ers, Jets, Dolphins and of course the Seahawks.

Minnesota: The Vikings are no longer in the coaching search phase and are now finalizing final interviews with their top candidates. The coach that seems to be leading the pack is Mike Zimmer, 57, is the current defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals and is one of the most well respected coaches in the league. He took a defense this year who lost its top defensive lineman and cornerback and still had the competing as best in the league. Players love him as a coach and he deserves his shot as a head coach.

Question of the Day

(Inspired by Fran)
Who are your favorite TV personalities that call NFL football games?

Sunday Predictions

San Francisco 49ers at Carolina Panthers: These two teams met earlier in the season the the Panthers squeaked out a one point victory. In the first meeting Vernon Davis was knocked out early, Michael Crabtree wasn't playing and the team wasn't clicking like it is now. As for the Panthers they can match San Fran's defense step for step and Colin Kap was a non issue against this team. The weather in Charlotte wasn't great over the weekend and I think the run game plays a major factor. I am taking the San Francisco 49ers (-1) to beat the Panthers 16-10 (over/under is 42.5)

San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos: Peyton Manning is facing a team for the 3rd time this season and that factors well for the Broncos. The Chargers won't be able to show Peyton anything thehy didn't use before and Manning knows that. This game is going to be high scoring and I'll always take Peyton in a scoring matchup game. I am taking the Denver Broncos to beat the Chargers 34-28 (Chargers +9.5) and the over 55.5.

Saturday's Matchups

New Orleans Saints at Seattle Seahawks: Seattle is one of the most difficult teams in the league to beat, especially when they are at home. These two teams met about a month ago on national television in Seattle and this game wasn't even close. While I don't think it'll be a blow out I do think the Seahawks will win. With Seattle's ability to rush the passer and the Saints lack of pass protectors it makes for a difficult game. Add into the fact that the snap counts have to change and the crowd noise and it becomes almost impossible. The Saints will be able to use quick passing attacks to neutralize some of the pressure but they'll still be able to get after Brees. Seattle gets one of its major playmakers back for the game today in Percy Harvin and while he isn't 100% he still demands respect which should open the running lanes for Lynch. I see Seattle winning the game 27-21. Seattle is favored by -9.5 so I am taking New Orleans in the bet and the over under of 44 I am taking the over.

Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots: A colts vs. patriots playoff game with a twist. This time instead of Manning running the Colts it will be Andrew Luck. The Colts offense looked pretty mediocre after Reggie Wayne went down with a torn acl. But over the last couple of weeks it seems they may have found their edge and with the play of Hilton, Wayne hasn't been missed as noticeably. The Patriots will be without their biggest offensive weapon Rob Gronkowski who also is missing because of a torn acl. This is a battle of the young era vs the veteran era and I am putting my faith in Brady. Weather conditions aren't great which will favor the Patriots because they thrive in terrible conditions. I am taking New England to win 27-24 which means I am taking Indianapolis at +7.5 and the under of 51.5.

Top 2014 Wide Receivers

With Kelvin Benjamin entering the NFL draft today here is a look at the top 5 wide receivers in this years NFL Draft:

1. Sammy Watkins, Clemson: Watkins has elite speed and quickness and clearly showed his big play ability in his bowl game against Ohio St. He plays bigger and stronger than his size of 6'1 205. He breaks arm tackles and has great short area bursts. He has excellent hands and rarely loses concentration. I have him as a top 10 talent in this years draft.

2. Marquise Lee, Southern Cal: Lee like Watkins is extremely explosive, so much so that he was up for the Heisman at wide receiver a year ago. No Heisman was won by a wide receiver since 1991 by Desmond Howard. Lee still had a productive season this year even with the coaching carousel that went on and he also dealt with a knee injury throughout the season. Lee is an above average route runner with ability to create separation on short and deep throws. Both he and Watkins are most dangerous after the catch. Top 15 talent.

3. Mike Evans, Texas A&M: Mike Evans is a big man at 6'4 220 pounds and does a great job using his size. He has a tendency to disappear sometimes during games which is why he isn't higher. He doesn't possess great straight line speed or quickness to create separation but he is able to use his size to win most contested catch battles. He is comparable to Vincent Jackson size wise and has the potential to be the same type of player. Top 20 talent

4. Jordan Matthews, Vanderbilt: Matthews possesses a great work ethic and around the league is a top 10 wide out in this years draft. I think he has the ability to go in the late first round. We saw his ability in his final bowl game and is the all time leading receiver in SEC history. He struggles a bit with separation but has great hands and rarely drops a pass. As a bigger WR he gets in and out of his breaks well and has decent top end speed.

5. Odell Beckham Jr., LSU: Beckham could be a late riser depending on his combine results. Beckham has great short area quickness and his extremely difficult to jam on the line of scrimmage. He has the ability to make difficult catches look easy. He possesses average top end speed and his big play ability isn't their as it is for the top two receivers in this class. He wasn't a big redzone target while at LSU catching just 4 total TDs in his two full seasons with the Tigers.

Another Florida St Star to Jump to NFL

Kelvin Benjamin joined the list of Florida St players leaving early to go to the NFL. Benjamin currently has a 2nd round grade but has some of the highest potential of most of the wide receivers in this draft class.

At 6'5 and over 230 pounds Benjamin is a physical freak who if he runs a great 40 time (speculative is in the high 4.5 low 4.6) could see his name jump into the first round based off potential. He is a below average route runner and he has a tough time making the easy catch.

Benjamin's biggest strengths are that he knows how to use his size in boxing out for catches and also using his height to catch balls at their highest point which makes him an excellent deep ball threat. A good comparison might be Danario Alexander with a little more size.

Should the NFL Change Its Rule on College Athletes?

The NFL has had a long standing rule in place that all college players must be three years removed from high school before they are allowed to enter the NFL draft. That rule was great and all because most kids stayed the full 4 years anyway and got their degree then entered the NFL. That just isn't the case anymore as of yesterday the NFL has received over a 100 underclassmen declaring for the NFL draft this season. That crushes last years record and this number will continue to grow every year.

Now more than ever kids are more prepared for the college game. They are strong, faster and smarter when it comes to football. Players like Maurice Clarett who opted to try and beat the system are far and few between. But now more and more players seem to be ready at a younger age.

In 2007 the NFL allowed for a 19 year old kid to be drafted into the league. He was a full year and a half younger than Clarett who they disallowed in 2004 and same for Larry Fitzgerald who petitioned to be allowed in after just two years (more on that later). Clarett was the first ever freshmen running back to start for the Ohio State Buckeyes and while he did have durability issues, he was able to compete amongst the best competition and thrive. He returned to Ohio State his sophomore season on to be suspended for the year and later removed from the school for miniscule reasons. He tried entering the draft but was disallowed because of this rule.

In 2004 Larry Fitzgerald a sophomore at Pittsburgh at the time decided he wanted to enter the NFL draft. He petitioned the league to allow him to enter because he did a year of military school after high school which meant he was 3 years removed and his appeal won. That year he was drafted #3 overall to the Arizona Cardinals.

In 2007 Amobi Okoye graduated from Louisville where he started attending when he was 15 years old. Okoye was only 19 and would be the only player to ever be drafted while still a teenager. He went #7 to the Houston Texans. Clearly, age in this case was not a deterrent for Houston and in the Larry Fitzgerald the two years of college football wasn't a deterrent for the Arizona Cardinals.

In 2013 NFL draft a highly touted underclassmen was being mentioned as a possible #1 overall pick, but he wasn't eligible. The problem for Jadeveon Clowney was that he was not out of high school long enough and therefore had to wait one more year even though most viewed him as an unanimous top draft choice. This year in the 2014 NFL draft another underclassmen is being highly touted as a potential #1 draft choice if he was eligible to enter the draft (Jameis Winston).

The two biggest concerns that are mentioned when talking about early entree players are, will they be fiscally savy enough to not spend all their money as 19 and 20 year old kids like to do and will that young of a person who hasn't experienced college football for that long be ready to take on the brutality of the NFL game.

My two thoughts on the matter are this, if a player decides he wants to enter the draft at an earlier age than most the NFL should provide more of a financial education program than it currently has. These early entry players most enroll and attend all of the meetings so that they get a better understanding of how they should be spending, investing and saving their money. And as for the 2nd reason, no NFL team will give a good draft grade (what they give young players entering to help them decide if they should enter or not) if they feel the player isn't ready for the game. If a early entry player gets a grade value of lower than a 3rd round choice it should be mandatory that they return to college for one more season.

The NFL likes to use the NCAA as its minor league system and they get to pluck from the crops whenever they want. If Roger Goodell is concerned about the health of these athletes than he should be recommending preventive steps for the NCAA like he does for the NFL. Up and coming freshmen know the value of longevity and how short careers in the NFL can be. Most feel that the earlier they enter the better it'll be for them come pay day and the NFL needs to do a better job of correcting that thinking and also providing the opportunity to help these young men out. A stronger financial program would be a start but at some point this three year rule will have to be removed, but it isn't happening this year and won't be happening for years to come.

Debate Time

Do you think the NFL should change its three year rule for college players entering the NFL?

Trivia Question of the Day

Who was the last quarterback to win a Super Bowl who wasn't a first round draft choice?

Washington Redskins Have Found Their Guy

Adam Schefter tweeted out this morning that the Washington Redskins and Jay Gruden the now former offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals have reached an agreement. It was made known over the last few days the close relationship Gruden had with the ownership of the Redskins and that the vacancy had come down to Gruden and James Franklin of Vanderbilt.

Franklin was offered the Penn St. job late last night and it sounded as if he took the Redskins off the table completely. Because of that the Redskins moved forward on Gruden and made him his offer.

Gruden has been under scrutiny for the way his offense has performed in their last two playoff games but in the regular season their is no denying he coached one of the premiere offenses in the league. Jay Gruden is the younger brother of Jon Gruden a former Tampa Bay and Oakland Raiders coach who now does work for ESPN. Jay was a head coach in the arena football league before coming over to the Bengals.

Whatever the case may be it was reported earlier this week RGIII had a say in who they brought in as a coach. And with Gruden's close ties to ownership I wonder how much say RGIII actually had. Either way it'll be an interesting season with Gruden as head coach of his first NFL team.

James Franklin to Penn St?

I am hearing very late tonight that Penn State has indeed offered James Franklin a job to be their head coach for the foreseeable future. Franklin will take the night to mull over the offer and make a decision tomorrow regarding whether or not he will return to Vanderbilt, continue searching for another opportunity or take the Penn St. offer.

Franklin, 41, has been at Vanderbilt for  3 seasons where he is 24-15. Many people have begun talking in the NFL about Franklin this offseason as a potential suitor for a couple of the openings this season. Franklin has yet to interview for any position in the NFL and he was most notably tied to the Redskins as a candidate.

Franklin is a coach on the rise after his first stint as a head coach in the college ranks. Many college and professional minds see Franklin as a rising star so if Penn St. is the school to land him then great job on their part. Either way Franklin may be in for a long night.

Johnny on the Spot

Johnny football has reportedly filed the paperwork necessary to make him eligible for the NFL draft in 2014 according to Gil Brandt of the NFL Network.

Rumors were swirling that he has signed both his endorsement agent and his NFL agent earlier this week and that he would announce this afternoon his decision to turn pro. He posted a picture with rapper Wale earlier today stating that the decision would be coming soon.

Manziel has been a hot topic of conversation not only for his play on the field but the way he lives his life off of it. He is constantly seen partying and hanging out with many top celebrities and celebrity athletes. Manziel on the field performance has never seemed to falter because of his lifestyle but serious questions will arise from teams wondering what his commitment will be to them and why they should invest millions upon millions into him.

I currently have Manziel rated in my top 5 quarterbacks in this draft class but I am not sure how well his play will carry over into the NFL. Also, he is a bit undersized and will hopefully register a decent height and weight at the NFL combine in February.
