Freak Out Friday

Freak out Friday will be a column I do every Friday morning after our Thursday night game to talk about some of the overreactions from fantasy owners. As we know people tend to watch and question why there star player they drafted in the 1st round didn’t perform to their level of expectations, or the owner who is looking for that dark sleeper who scores a touchdown out of nowhere and thinks he’ll become fantasy relevant for the comings weeks or perhaps even the entire year.
Last night Seattle’s defense was everything we thought it would be and more. After losing 7 starters from their defense a season ago some people questioned if this unit could return to form and they answered in a big way. I think it is safe to say that those who drafted Seattle’s defense will be very happy with their results.
As for the Packers defense, clearly they are going to get after the quarterback. Adding Julius Peppers looked like it has made a difference in adding another piece that can get after it. Their run defense was a concern going into the game though and it showed throughout as Lynch average over 5 yards per carry and Harvin averaged over 10. Fantasy owners who have owned Green Bay in the past know that this isn’t a team that is going to give you points in the yardage or points allowed area. They are built to get sacks and create turnovers, neither of which they did very well last night. They had 3 opportunities in which they could have come away with an interception and missed them and had a couple opportunities for multiple sacks. I think this defense will be a top 10 by years end and this was just a bump in the road.
Sticking with the Packers I think PPR owners were happy with production from both Nelson and Cobb, standard leagues just Cobb because of his touchdown. Nelson looked to clearly be Rodgers safety valve when he needed a play made in the game.
I know a lot of owners are concerned with the play of Eddie Lacy and the fact that he received a concussion late in the game. He had a concussion in the beginning of last season and that didn’t stop him from winning the rookie of the year. He’ll be fine throughout the season and still is a back end top 10 player for me. One player I dismissed and I think most owners did as well was James Starks. Clearly he is going to be involved in the offense and with 9 touches to Eddie Lacy’s 15 (would have been more if he wasn’t hurt) I think he is a handcuff worth owning in deeper leagues.
As for the Seahawks I don’t think there were any surprises. Russell Wilson made some early mistakes trying to force a couple passes but overall had a very good game. Marshawn Lynch proved that his 400+ touches last season aren’t slowing him down this year. The biggest surprise for me were the 11 touches for Percy Harvin. The Seahawks made it clear they wanted to use him early and often and they did. He looked very dangerous in the jet sweep but to finish as a top 20 fantasy receiver he’ll have to continue the output he had last night in every game. If he gets used the same in game 2 then I will think about bumping him into my WR2 area but for now he is still a WR3. I don’t make anything of Lockette touchdown or the fact that Baldwin had a quiet game (saw two less targets than Harvin, but was the 2nd most targeted player on the team).

So don’t freak out to much fantasy owners, and if people in your league are worried about Lacy, I’d trade for him.
